Having strong communication and negotiation skills are crucial in both personal and professional settings. It involves transmitting a message in a clear, concise, and meaningful way that allows the receiver to understand the message as intended.

  1. Active listening: When we listen actively, we focus our attention on the speaker and show them that we are interested in what they have to say. We can do this by maintaining eye contact, nodding, and asking clarifying questions.

Misunderstandings and conflicts can arise due to a lack of communication or ineffective negotiation skills, leading to negative consequences such as broken relationships, loss of business deals, and costly litigation. To avoid such outcomes, individuals must develop and enhance their communication and negotiation skills.

The Communication and Negotiation course offered by the Professional Home Builders Institute (PHBI) in Calgary and Edmonton is designed to help individuals develop and improve their communication and negotiation skills. The course aims to equip learners with the necessary communication strategies to identify barriers, and differentiate between judging, assuming, and describing statements.

Upon completing the course, learners will be able to describe five conflict styles, exhibit self-awareness, demonstrate active listening skills, speak assertively, understand the anger arousal cycle, prepare for a negotiation, conduct a negotiation using an understanding-based model, and deal with disagreements that may arise in a negotiation. Furthermore, successful completion of the course qualifies towards the equivalent of 30 hours of training towards a national Qualified Mediator Designation.
